How clean are the trains? How well does the passenger information work? Does the equipment work? Are train attendants friendly? The Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) investigates these questions and creates an annual ranking. Regional transport networks land on a scale of -100 to +100. The networks in the Augsburg region will deteriorate in 2023 compared to 2022, but will land clearly in the green zone, according to a statement from the BEG.
The results of the measurements have financial implications for the network operators. If a company reaches a value of zero, the BEG’s expectations have just been met. Those who exceed the value receive a bonus payment, while those who receive negative points pay a penalty.
In the southern district of Augsburg, the service on trains is better than in the north
Even if the trend is going in the wrong direction and the service quality falls back to pre-Corona levels according to the BEG, there are bonus payments for the networks in the Augsburg region. Augsburger Netze Lot 1, which includes the trains between Gessertshausen, Dinkelscherben and Ulm, as well as between Augsburg, Meitingen and Donauwörth, achieved 15 points. That is four less than the year before. Go Ahead Bayern has been the operator of the former Fugger Express since December 2022. The company has been part of the Austrian Federal Railways since 2024 and operates under the name Arverio.
The Ostallgäu-Lechfeld network, which is operated by the Bavarian Regiobahn and includes routes between Augsburg, Schwabmünchen and Füssen, fares better. It received 43 points. This is also a significant deterioration compared to the previous year, when it received 59 points. The average of the 32 regional transport networks evaluated in Bavaria is 33 points. The leader in the Free State, with a full 100 out of 100 points, is the Kahlgrundbahn, known as “the Bembel”, which runs between Hanau and Schöllkrippen in the Lower Franconian district of Aschaffenburg.
The punctuality of the trains is probably more important to many passengers than the service. According to figures published in the spring, it was a stable 95.1 percent in the Ostallgäu-Lechfeld network. Augsburger Netze Lot 1 only achieved 80.2 percent. This means that one in five trains here was delayed by six minutes or more.
