In Genk (Belgium), Servette achieved one of the greatest exploits in its history in the European Cup. It was only a second qualifying round of the Champions League but the way in which the Genevans overcame a succession of adverse events to come back twice (2-2) and win the shots on goal (4-1) commands admiration. In bad shape following the draw in the first leg (1-1), they delivered an admirable match in very unfavorable circumstances, with an entry expulsion (Crivelli), a severe penalty, a second Belgian goal marred by a foul and injuries to Alexis Antunes and Jérémy Frick.
Without his goalkeeper and captain, Servette discovered his replacement Joël Mall, an improbable hero born in Baden and international… Cypriot, who arrived anonymously this summer but decisive in the penalty shootout, each time starting on the right side and pushing two Belgian shooters to miss the target. Opposite, Touati, Guillemenot, Severin and Rodelin managed a clear round.
