Servette FC lost heavily on the lawn of Slavia Prague (4-0). After a good start to the match, the Genevans were punished by the Czechs on their first opportunity. Third place, essential for the club’s European future, had already been acquired since the 1-1 draw once morest AS Roma and the Servettians approached this match without any accounting issues.
THE GAME: Defeated 2-0 at the Stade de Genève on September 21, the Genevans were keen to recover. It was Chris Bedia who managed to create the first opportunity with a cross shot in the 5th minute of play. Despite a good start to the match and shots from Chris Bedia and Miroslav Stevanovic, it was the Slavia Prague players who opened the scoring thanks to a header from David Doudera.
The appearance of the first 15 minutes was very reminiscent of the double confrontation once morest AS Roma, once morest whom the Genevans had entered the game well before conceding the first goal. In the 19th minute, Slavia even almost doubled the lead but the Czech striker came up short on Jérémy Frick’s foot. Unfortunately for the Genevans, the goalkeeper and captain of Servette FC only delayed the deadline. The 2-0 was scored by Ivan Schranz following a poorly cleared cross by Servette, the same Frick repelled the first shot but Schranz, alone at 5 meters, only had to push the ball into the back of the net. And Slavia even scored a third goal thanks to another uncrossed header, this time from a corner, from Mojmir Chytil.
At 3-0, the match, which already had no stakes for the Servettians, completely turned around. However, Servette FC did not give up like the action of Alexis Antunes (36th) but the Garnets might not do it and Samba Lélé Diba lost the ball once morest the Czech pressure and Mojmir Chytil, whose shot was deflected by Nicolas Vouilloz, making it 4-0 just before half-time. In the second half, René Weiler tried to change the course of things with the entries of Keigo Tsunemoto, Anthony Baron, Timothé Cognat and Dereck Kutesa for the exits of Samba Lélé Diba, Alexis Antunes, Chris Bedia and Miroslav Stevanovic (62nd).
Following these changes, the face of Servette FC was no longer the same. The ball returned to Geneva and they showed more creativity than in the first half. Geneva’s good intentions were not enough and Slavia, through Muhamed Tijani (80th) might have made the score even worse. Final score 4 to 0 for the Czechs. Servette FC therefore left the Europa League with a defeat but will have great memories of this competition to look back on.
YOUTH: For this meeting without accounting issues for the Grenat, René Weiler decided to field several young players: Alexis Antunes (23 years old), Nicolas Vouilloz (22 years old), Théo Magnin (20 years old) and Samba Lélé Diba (19 years old). In addition, the bench was well stocked with goalkeepers Marwan Aubert (17 years old), Leo Besson (21 years old) and field players Hussayn Touati (22 years old) as well as Tiemoko Ouattara (18 years old).
END OF SERIES: Undefeated since October 5 and a 4-0 defeat at the Stadio Olympico once morest AS Roma, 12 games, the Servettians were forced to put an end to this good series in Prague.
AFFLUENCE: It was in a sold-out Eden Arena that the Servettians traveled. Slavia Prague announced on Tuesday on its social networks that the stadium, with a capacity of 19,370 spectators, would be full for the third time in three home matches in this Europa League. The ultra Czech group “Tribuna Sever” set up a tifo during the second half, with each member of the stand dressed in black, white or red to form the group’s logo.
OPPONENTS: It was not the first time that Servette FC faced one of the teams from the city of Prague in a European competition. Indeed, in 1961-1962, the Genevans faced Dukla Prague. Winners 4-3 at Charmilles, they lost 2-0 in Prague. During the 1982-1983 season, it was the Bohemians who stood up to Servette who lost 2-1 in the Czech Republic following a 2-2 draw at home. The last confrontations date back to the 2001-2002 season and Servette FC won 1-0 in Geneva and held… Slavia Prague to a 1-1 draw.
