Battle with the flames for the tenth day, aerial firefighting units continue to provide aerial firefighting means to control and extinguish the fire that broke out on the evening of Thursday, July 18, on Mount Orvilos, above Achladochori, in the Municipality of Sintiki, and has so far burned more than 11,000 acres of forest.
Unpredictable gusts of wind have reignited the fires which reach up to and behind the ridge and into Bulgarian territory where firefighters from the neighboring country are operating.
Ground forces have been operating from Greece for three days, but only through a path and not where there is a minefield and there is danger.
A total of 28 firefighters, twenty from P.Y. Serres and the levels of Sidirokastro and Kato Porio and eight Forest Commanders of the 2nd Special Unit of Forestry Operations (EMODE) are fighting the flames.
