Serres: Locks the closed swimming pool

The Serres Indoor Swimming Pool is closing indefinitely, the Mayor of Serres, Varvara Mitliaga, announced today at a press conference, where she explained the reasons.

“As a municipal authority we want to be useful and not pleasant” emphasized Mrs. Mitliaga, characterizing the building situation in the swimming pool as too dangerous, which means that it cannot open and operate, as – as she argued – very serious interventions must be made , not repairs, but support work on the columns, in order to achieve static adequacy. “There should be no more superficial and “snappy” restorations of the damage,” stressed Varvara Mitliaga, blaming those who operated the swimming pool in previous years.

The Mayor of Serres pointed out that the situation in the sports structure is much worse than what the Municipal Authority expected. “The problem that the contractor’s crews saw at the base of the swimming pool and the beams is big and serious,” said Mrs. Mitliaga, emphasizing: “An update was requested from the Technical Service of the Municipality of Serres. As we were told, the armor has oxidized in several places. The pillars are hollow, there are pebbles instead of cement. There is not enough cement to properly support the pillars of the pool, and there are fasteners on the pillars, which have been damaged.”

The finding of the problem was established by the crews of the contractor company that undertook to do the works in the Swimming Pool after pieces fell from the concrete of the roof at the end of March 2024 during the training of the artistic swimming department of the MSS Panserraikos.

“The result is obvious and now unquestionable to everyone. It is about a building that has multiple and bigger problems than we thought about it and we declared that the opening will happen unexpectedly at the end of September” said the Mayor of Serres who invited athletes, parents and those who used the swimming pool to see, if they wish, the situation witnessed by the people who had started the work and had to stop it when they found that the problem is bigger than they expected.

“For us, what is important is safety. We have said this from the first moment we took office and we continue to say it. The result may be unpleasant and there may be reactions, but the main thing for all of us is to avoid an accident”, emphasizes the Mayor of Serres.

In fact, Mrs. Mitliaga said that another problem was found with the pool showing water losses, which, as she underlined, seems to have been known to the previous municipal authorities. “When the pool water stopped being filled and renewed it was found that the swimming pool was losing 60 cubic meters of water per day. Essentially, a large volume of water is lost and to date no obvious leakage has been 100% detected. Some assessments have been made, some tests were also done during the summer, but unfortunately the cause of the leak was not found,” said the Mayor of Serres.

Ms. Mitliaga said she was optimistic that “listening ears” would be found in order to provide funding for the sports facility. “Now we have to claim money. I believe they will all help. We are not alone in this place. Many people love this place. I don’t think they’ll let us “fight” alone?” said the Mayor of Serres.

As for the anxiety and concern of the swimmers, sportsmen, sportsmen and citizens who train in the swimming pool, Mrs. Mitliaga emphasized that she respects and understands it, saying that in the coming days there will be announcements on how the world of athletics will be financially supported the period that the swimming pool will be closed saying that he has already contacted the Mayor of Kavala, Theodoros Mouriadis, in order to allocate hours and days to the swimming pool there, while he stressed that the associations will be financially supported and the Municipality of Serres will take care of transporting the athletes to swimming pools of the neighboring prefectures.

Varvara Mitliaga blamed the former Municipal Authority of Alexandros Chrysafis, saying that “at the altar of being pleasant and not necessarily useful, the former municipal authority “succeeded” and lost the 2,480,000 euros that the former Municipal Authority of Petros had secured Angelidis for the energy upgrade of the building”.

Finally, Mrs. Mitliaga emphasized that the main priority remains the construction of the training swimming pool at the Omonia Sports Park and added: “This is an alternative solution in the world of swimming. From the first moment we have taken all the appropriate and correct steps to deal with this situation with the swimming pool of the Valley of Agioi Anargyro”.

The former Mayor of Serres, Alexandros Chrysafis, speaking during the Municipal Council meeting, responding to Ms. Mitliaga, who characterized as inaccuracies what the Mayor said, emphasized that his own municipal authority did projects of 600 thousand euros in the Swimming Pool, an unprecedented amount as he pointed out. “We sealed the pool, changed the drilling, made disabled toilets, removed the rotten tiles, etc.” said Mr. Chrysafis.

“If you have a serious complaint that we were hiding the problem, tell us. We did important work at the swimming pool,” said Mr. Chrysafis, who spoke of the current Mayor’s “lies” regarding what he said about the loss of money for the energy upgrade, mentioning all the actions they took to implement this. In fact, he presented a document from the technical service of the Municipality which said that the static adequacy study must be done first and then the energy upgrade. “The swimming pool is not closed or opened by the Mayor, but by an independent committee,” said Mr. Chrysafis.

“You are used to throwing the blame elsewhere. The reality is one. It was known that the swimming pool had major problems but you chose to operate it. The people choose us to take responsibility” replied the Mayor of Serres.

The Deputy Mayor of Urban Planning, Pavlos Pouliakas said: “The independent authority requests documents from the services to proceed with the opening or closing.” “For the first time actions were taken and a serious problem was investigated” said the Deputy Mayor of Education, Sports, Panagiotis Keisoglou, while the Deputy Mayor of Infrastructure Athanasios Gatsios said: “As the technical service told us, the next step is machines to scan the swimming pool building, let’s see the size of the problem, give us an opinion and then a static adequacy study will be done to see how and with how much money we will deal with it”.
