These are hours of great apprehension at Fiorentina. General manager Joe Barone was struck by a serious illness (apparently a heart attack) a few hours before the Atalanta-Fiorentina match, which in the meantime has been postponed by the League to a later date.
Barone was on retreat with the team at the Winter Garden in Grassobbio when he was struck by a sudden illness. Fiorentina team doctor Luca Pengue gave him first aid. Barone was subsequently transported to San Raffaele in Milan, where he is hospitalized in intensive care: his condition is said to be critical.
Fifty-eight years old, born in Italy but living in Brooklyn since childhood, Joe Barone is Rocco Commisso’s man in the world of football. In fact, the Italian-American tycoon has entrusted the management of Fiorentina to him.
The two met a few years ago in a banking institution, where Barone worked. From there the job in Mediacom (the telecommunications company owned by Commisso).
In 2017 Barone became vice-president of the New York Cosmos, a football team owned by Commisso. But the latter’s dream was Serie A. A dream realized with the purchase of Fiorentina from the Della Valle brothers, 4 seasons ago now. From his first day at Fiorentina, Commisso entrusted the management of the club to Barone, who led the creation of Viola Park and is now taking an interest in the stadium case.
