Two people have been injured and are hospitalized in an apparent “serious crime” committed at a high school in Malmö in southern Sweden, and a suspect has been arrested, police said Monday evening.
The two victims are adults, not students, the authorities said during an improvised press briefing in front of the establishment in the evening.
Alerted around 4:15 p.m. GMT, the police dispatched significant resources and were able to regain control of the situation at Malmö Latinskola, a large high school in Sweden’s third largest city, according to the still very incomplete account of the authorities.
After initial reports of screaming at the school, “we have had more information suggesting that a serious crime is being committed with acts of violence inside the school”, has police spokesman Nils Norling told AFP.
“The first police patrol on the spot was able to arrive at the school and arrest a male suspect. They were also able to see that there were two injured people inside the school,” he said.
No information on the nature of the injuries has been released to the press, nor on the identity of the victims or the possible motivations of the alleged attacker.
“What we can say at this stage is that we have no reports of gunfire…nothing to suggest gunshot wounds,” Norling said.
At the time of the events, about fifty people were in the establishment.
The school, inside which several potential witnesses were still being questioned around 8:00 p.m. GMT, is located in the center of Malmö.
