Serious Case of Harassment: Debates in Neufchâteau Correctional Court

A serious case of harassment was debated this Thursday before the correctional court of Neufchâteau.

On the one hand, Me Benjamin Dethier who defends the interests of the civil party, victim of multiple harassments following a separation.

Opposite, Me Didier Bernard defending the defendant, a 47-year-old father from Bertrix, a former train driver. The latter is being prosecuted for having beaten his ex-wife, including an attempted strangulation, in October 2021, when the husband wanted to return to his house.

“I only pushed her away. I have never been violent with my wife. Her skin blushes easily!”, Answers the defendant. “My client only dismissed his wife. The medical document cannot prove that there was an attempt at strangulation. For this prevention, you must acquit him with the benefit of the doubt”, pleads Me Bernard.

He follows her to Brussels

But there is in the file a whole series, impressive, of acts of harassment, noted one by one by the deputy public prosecutor Julien Docquier.

The defendant follows in particular all the movements of his minor daughter who goes out with a boyfriend of Bertrix. The father takes a picture of her with the young man, he films them on video, he films the house of the in-laws, he waits for her in the school parking lot.

“It is normal that I am interested in my daughter and her associations. She is a minor,” said the defendant. “His daughter sleeps out at 15 with her boyfriend. The dad wants to have information regarding his daughter, what might be more normal?”, adds Me Bernard.

For the public prosecutor, the height is reached when it is discovered that the defendant has placed a GPS tracker, with his SIM card, in the grille of his ex-wife’s car. That way he always knows where she is. The lady thus found herself in a restaurant in Brussels and her ex-husband was surprised to take photos in front of the establishment! For the acts of harassment and beatings, the prosecution is demanding a one-year prison sentence and a €200 fine.

And to Türkiye

While the defendant seemed to say that he had reconciled with his minor daughter and had even had a good time with her this summer in Turkey during a family gathering, Me Benjamin Dethier and the son of the defendant dispute this version. The defendant joined his family at their vacation spot when he was not invited.

“We told him several times in Turkey that he might no longer come near us and we had to call the police to tell him,” even specifies the eldest son. New facts that will be debated on October 5 in Neufchâteau.
