Two people lost their lives in an accident late Monday morning on the E40 near Grand-Bigard, in the direction of Ghent-Brussels, the federal police said. The first victim was driving a truck and the second a car. Two other drivers were injured, but are not in mortal danger. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. when a truck hit the end of a line. The truck hit a car and two other trucks. The driver of the truck that hit the car and the driver of the latter did not survive the impact. The other two truck drivers are slightly affected.
The highway had to be closed to traffic due to the accident. All vehicles heading towards Brussels must leave the E40 at the Ternat exit and follow the diversions. The Flemish Traffic Center advises people traveling between Ghent and Brussels to go through Antwerp.
Experts must go to the scene, which delayed the clearing of the roadway. The disturbances might still last.
