Michael Breme, chairman of the board of Audi Hungaria Zrt., said that from now on, the Győr factory is the first to produce a vehicle of a “sister brand”.
The production of the new model will contribute to the high capacity utilization of the vehicle factory in the next five years, he emphasized.
According to Les Zoltán, Audi Hungaria board member responsible for vehicle production, the Terramar is built on the same production platform as the Audi Q3.
Cupra CEO Wayne Griffith said the brand, established in 2018, is the fastest growing brand in the industry, with 700,000 vehicles sold worldwide in six years.
István Joó, CEO of the National Investment Agency – HIPA, emphasized in his speech: Hungarian vehicle production directly employs 150,000 people, and more than seven hundred companies operate in the sector. The strength and innovation capacity of the sector is shown by the fact that around 90 percent of the products are exported. Since 2018, Hungary has been one of the 20 largest exporting countries producing 90 percent of the world’s car exports, he said.
Thanks to the developments of the past period and the investments to be completed in the near future, the number of cars produced in this country could double within a few years and increase to over one million a year, he added.
Audi Hungaria is an important strategic partner and the largest investor in Hungarian vehicle production, he said, adding that since the company was founded, it has invested around 12 million euros, and last year it produced more than 1,600,000 engines and 170,000 vehicles.
He emphasized that the production of the Cupra Terramar in Hungary is a recognition of the company and shows that it is worth investing in Hungary.
Audi Hungaria previously told MTI that they have been working on the integration of Terramar into the production system for more than two years, with the biggest transformation taking place in the body factory.
The Terramar’s market launch number will be 3,700, after which around three hundred will be produced daily. According to plans, 770 vehicles will be produced per day, 60 percent of which will be Audi Q3 and 40 percent Cupra Terramar.
The Terramar will be available with five different powertrains in three different technologies: petrol, mild hybrid and the new generation plug-in hybrid. Gasoline and mild hybrid engines are also manufactured in Győr.
Delivery of the model will begin in the last quarter of this year.
A member of the Volkswagen group, the Spanish SEAT appeared in 2010 with the Cupra, which became an independent brand in 2018.
Audi Hungaria Zrt. is a member of the Audi concern, the central engine supplier of the Audi and Volkswagen concerns. In 2023, it produced 1,660,425 engines and 171,775 vehicles. It directly employs more than 12,000 people in Győr, and together with service providers and suppliers, nearly 50,000.
The current step proves that the Hungarian factory is important to Audi. The company, like other European car manufacturers, has to face serious challenges, and as a result, it is already planning to close its Belgian plant, which, according to the latest news, it may sell to the Chinese Nio:
