  • A series of knife attacks has caused fear and terror in Canada.

  • The two alleged perpetrators are said to have already killed ten people.

  • Although the identities are known, the suspects have still not been caught.

After a series of knife attacks that killed ten people in Canada, the two alleged perpetrators were still on the run on Monday. Police in the province of Saskatchewan called on citizens to immediately report possible clues to the whereregardings of the two men, aged 30 and 31. “We will not stop until we have these two in safe custody,” Regina police chief Evan Bray said Monday in a video on Twitter. The motive for the attacks on a reservation for indigenous people and a nearby place remained unclear.

Drug crime as a motive?

The head of the Association of Indigenous Nations of Canada, Bobby Cameron, assumed a connection with drug-related crime. “This is the devastation we face when illicit drugs invade our communities,” he said. The situation in the reserves must improve.

All of Canada was shocked by the events on the reservation of the so-called James Smith Cree Nation and the village of Weldon on Sunday, it was one of the deadliest bloody crimes in the country’s recent history. On Sunday, Saskatchewan Police Deputy Chief Rhonda Blackmore said some victims appeared to have been targeted while suspects killed others indiscriminately. In addition to the ten dead, there were also 15 injured at the 13 crime scenes.

Suspects are known to the police

Two men with the same last name were named as suspects. The police did not initially say whether they were related. One of them had already been searched for in a different context last May. According to investigators, the two were last seen on Sunday followingnoon (local time) in Regina, around 335 kilometers south of the crime scene. Authorities in Saskatchewan’s neighboring provinces of Manitoba and Alberta also called on residents to be vigilant. In many places in otherwise rather quiet rural Canada, the fear continued on Monday.

“Afraid to open the door”

The entire community was shaken to the core, said Ruby Works, a resident of Weldon, where some of the crimes occurred. ‘No one in this place will ever sleep once more. They will be afraid to open the door.” In the James Smith Cree Nation, people gathered at a convenience store to offer comfort to one another. Many had tears in their eyes and hugged each other.

The most momentous bloody crime in Canada’s recent history occurred in 2020, when a man disguised as a police officer killed 22 people in a shooting spree in the province of Nova Scotia. A year earlier in Toronto, a man swerved his vehicle into passers-by, killing 10 people. In Canada, such violent crimes are relatively less common than in the neighboring United States.
