Sergio Scariolo Fired as Coach of Virtus Bologna: Latest Updates and Potential Move to AS Monaco

2023-09-15 13:45:00

Sergio Scariolo, coach of the Spanish national team, is no longer the coach of Virtus Bologna. The Italian club has indeed decided to fire its technician today.

We know coaches who have a better month of September than Sergio Scariolo.

After the premature elimination of La Roja at the 2023 World Cup (the Spaniards exited in the second round), Scariolo has just learned that he has been dismissed from his position by the leaders of Virtus Bologna. The latter obviously did not appreciate some of the comments made by the Italian coach at a press conference a few days ago. “The objectives and the philosophy of play? That’s a question for management. The club built this team and they gave it to me” Scariolo declared in particular.

“The coach’s comments addressed to the press on September 13, which follow those made during the end-of-season press conference on June 27, 2023, unfortunately compromise the serenity and enthusiasm of the Virtus and the group which is preparing to face its first deadlines of the new sporting season, with the aim of achieving important results at national and international level.”

The Virtus Bologna press release to justify his decision

Sergio Scariolo spent two years at Virtus Bologna, winning the Italian Super Cup twice (2021, 2022), the EuroCup in 2022 and returning the club to the EuroLeague. Bologna have also been finalists in the Italian championship twice in a row (2022, 2023) under his command, and finalists in the Italian Cup this year. Scariolo had one year left on his contract with the Italian club, which might now hire Luca Banchi, former coach of SIG Strasbourg and elected best coach of the 2023 World Cup following Latvia’s superb run.

As for Scariolo, rumors suggest that he might bounce back with… Monaco.
