Withdrawn during the day’s tests in Miami, Sergio Pérez is aware of having to do better.
The pilots Red Bull had mixed fortunes in free practice at the Miami Grand Prix. For Max Verstappenthe day went relatively well, with fourth place in EL1 and the best time in EL2, a session in which the Dutchman was four tenths ahead of the competition.
On the other hand, Sergio Perez had more difficulties. The Mexican was only eleventh in the first session, almost a second and a half behind the best time including one second behind his teammate, while in EL2 his deficit on Verstappen was five tenths. Pérez, however, is quick to make his mea culpa.
“I didn’t have the best Friday ever, but my lap was also very bad, I had a wheel lock at the last corner”explains the urban circuit specialist. “I can do a lot better with my riding, because I didn’t ride very well today. If I manage to improve my riding and be a little more comfortable, it should be fine.”
With the new asphalt laid on the Miami track, the conditions clearly didn’t help the veteran to exploit his Red Bull: “The conditions are very bad, the grip was very poor – especially in FP1. It felt like intermediate tire conditions. We tested a few things in terms of mechanical balance, I think we learned quite a bit. In the long stint, I don’t think we managed to read the situation, because of the few laps we did, but overall I think we have a good pace.”
Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
At the same time, it was a serene Verstappen who presented himself to the press this Friday evening. “It was a good day”is satisfied the double World Champion. “At first it was regarding getting used to the track with the new asphalt, it got stronger as the day went on. I always felt good in the car, and we had a good balance. And not just in qualifying simulations: “AT every time we were on the track with a lot of fuel, we also had a good balance.
Verstappen, however, makes the same observation as Pérez on the new asphalt of the track: “It’s still slippery out of the line. On the line, it’s fine, but as soon as you get out of it a little bit, there is a lot less grip. It’s the same for everyone. The most important is that the car had a good balance today to start, so I was happy.”
All that remains is to refine the RB19 to materialize over the rest of the weekend and sign a possible sixth consecutive victory for Red Bull. “There are still a few things that we want to study. We want to be fast in all the turns, but that’s not always possible! We also have to see what the weather will do”, concludes Verstappen. A slight chance of showers exists for Sunday’s race.
