Sergio Higuita wins and assaults the leadership of the Tour of Poland – International Cycling

The Bora-hansgrohe ‘beetle’ took the third stage of the 2022 Tour of Poland, over a 237.9-kilometre stretch between Kraśnik and Przemyśl. Sergio Higuita was the best in the explosive finale and became the new leader of the general classification.

In an extensive partial, with a large part of the flat sections that served to accumulate fatigue, the most interesting was in the last 40 kilometers, with three consecutive slopes and the finish uphill. On the slopes, several fighters moved from the main group, but the tight marking did not allow any of them to open a gap.

Michel Hessmann (TJV), who was part of the breakaway, was the standout and led the climbs alone. The 21-year-old held his pulse on the majority and, following leading in Gruszowa (3rd category), the peloton fell on him. Thus, there were 22 kilometers left to close and the large batch was once once more rolling in a group. In this way they went to the end, where a demanding closing awaited them.

On the final hill, 1.6km at 8.3%, Mike Teunissen (TJV) opened fire and took a few meters lead. But the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez (IGD) did a phenomenal job. With his partner Richard Carapaz at the wheel, they brought Teunissen back and headed for the main lot. Even Narváez was very strong to close the gap for a subsequent attack, although Carapaz did not look as solid and exploded at the same time as his compatriot.

There was still room for more and Quentin Pacher (GFC) took the lead with 500m to go. Sergio Higuita was gradually recovering positions and turned in the final corner, 200 meters from the finish line, in second position. With a little more freshness in his legs, the Colombian stood up on the pedals, passed the Frenchman and headed for victory, beating Pello Bilbao and Quinten Hermans. Also, with the bonuses obtained, the ‘Monster’ became the new leader of the race.
