Sergio Bidó, former Dominican basketball player, murdered in the Bronx

Several outlets report the incident as the first violent crime of 2023 in New York

Sergio García “Bidó”a former Dominican athlete, was killed in the early hours of Sunday just a few hours before the start of 2023, according to various media outlets in New York City.

Local police reported that a 63-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the Bronx due to an argument over a parking space, with the attacker subsequently fleeing the scene, leaving the Dominican as the first victim of a violent crime of the new year in the American city.

According to the ABC 7 New York report, there is a video of the incident showing a fight that took a violent turn with only one vehicle, a black van that belonged to the victim, parked in front of a building. A woman was injured in the incident but is out of danger.

The Dominican Basketball Federation issued a statement regretting the death of Bidó, born in Villa Duarte, and expressing its regret for what happened to the former basketball player.

“We wish that God gives strength to his family and friends. Peace to his soul ”, was the message left by FEDOMBAL on their social networks.

Sergio was champion in the 1983 National Games held in San Pedro de Macorís representing the National District and the same year he was champion with the Arroyo Hondo club in the Superior Basketball Tournament of the National District.

According to the Dominican Basketball Hall of Fame Facebook group, Sergio Bidó had his beginnings in boxing as a national champion and in the military games of the Dominican Republic in the heavyweight category.

Bido, 63, also played in basketball teams in other provinces of the country and reinforced in Venezuela.

Social networks have reported on fundraising actions to cover the funeral expenses of the former Dominican basketball player. Friends of Sergio García in New York held a vigil demanding justice for the violent act.
