The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards ceremony will take place on November 6 at the American Museum of Natural History. Tennis player Serena Williams will be named style icon at the event, reports WWD.
This is the first time the Fashion Icon Award will be presented to an athlete. Off the court, Williams, 42, boasts a lifelong love of fashion. “Ever since I was a little girl, I used fashion as a way of expressing myself—fashion gave me the confidence to go on court and acknowledge who I was and where I knew I was going,” Serena previously said in an interview. Tom Brown, Chairman of the CFDA, commented on the experts’ selection, saying: “Serena is one of the most inspiring people in the world, a true individual. She is an icon of the sports world, representing greatness at the highest level, bringing fashion to a different world for a different audience. <...> A perfect combination of our worlds, the ultimate example of individuality in everything she does. Serena is a true fashion icon.”
In previous years, CFDA style icons included Rihanna, Leni Kravitz, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and others.
Earlier, Serena Williams ridiculed Kim Kardashian for a photo on the tennis court in a bold image.
