BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia sent hundreds of officers Saturday to an area on the border with Hungary, where they detained several people following a shooting between migrants that left three people dead and one wounded, police said.
Reports of violence and shootings have become common near the border between Serbia and European Union member Hungary. Thousands of migrants have camped in the area, looking for a way to cross with the help of human smugglers.
Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic, who visited the area, promised that “we will not move from here until all those responsible for any criminal act or incident are expelled.”
The police actions are aimed at “stopping irregular immigration and raising the level of security in this part of the country, where confrontations between immigrants are frequent, not infrequently involving the use of firearms,” the force said in a statement.
Police said they arrested two people from Kosovo on Saturday suspected of smuggling migrants and supplying them with weapons. The agents also found 54 Turkish passports, the statement added.
Late on Friday, the police reported the arrest of four Afghan citizens and two Turks suspected of illegal possession of weapons and explosives. It was not immediately clear if any of those arrested will be charged in the shooting that took place early Friday.
The alleged confrontation between groups of migrants occurred in some abandoned agricultural warehouses near the town of Horgos. Police said the injured migrant received medical assistance and that an investigation was underway. The nationalities of the victims and the injured migrant, as well as other details, remained unclear.
