Serbia eliminates free visa for Cuban citizens

The Republic of Serbia eliminated the free visa for Cubans who are holders of diplomatic, official and ordinary passports, as anticipated at the end of March.

In addition to the general entry requirements, Cubans must present a series of additional documents, explained the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia.

These include a notarized letter of invitation or proof of accommodation in a hotel or similar facility, proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses during your stay, as well as a health insurance policy to cover possible medical expenses in a minimum amount of 20 000 euro.

In addition, they must present proof of a paid round-trip plane ticket with a fixed date of return to the country of origin or previous entry.

These requirements apply to all Cuban citizens who do not have a temporary or permanent residence in the Republic of Serbia, and who have not previously obtained a long-term visa.

The measure seeks to guarantee a safe trip and a pleasant stay in the European country.

At the end of March, the newspaper Diario de Cuba reported that Serbia would eliminate the free visa for Cubans, a measure that would come into force as of this Saturday.

Cuban lawyer Fernando Almeyda, resident in Belgrade, said that the necessary measures were being taken, internally, “so that this decision enters into effect on that scheduled date or at least close to it.”

The pressures of the European Union also on the subject of the free visa have been interpreted by different experts as one of the causes of the measure.

With the aim of controlling the illegal migratory flow towards European territory, by the end of 2022 it was anticipated that some 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin Americaincluding Cuba, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bolivia, China, India and Jamaica, would be left out of the list of visa-free nations.

During that year, the entry of illegal immigrants into European territory increased by more than 170%, mainly through the Western Balkans, therefore the Group of 27 established conditions to control its borders.
