September 26, 1988: Salman Rushdie’s novel “The Satanic Verses” is published

1988: The book “The Satanic Verses”, a novel by the Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie, is published. It’s regarding Indian immigrants in Great Britain and the life of the Prophet Mohammed. The appearance sparked a series of protests and acts of violence by Muslims. The Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini condemned Rushdie to death because of some passages in the book.
2008: The long-serving state governor of Carinthia, Leopold Wagner (SPÖ), dies at the age of 81.
2008: US actor Paul Newman dies of lung cancer at the age of 83.
2013: In the “Blood Diamond Trial” in The Hague, the former President of Liberia, Charles Taylor, was sentenced to 50 years in prison following a seven-year trial. The 65-year-old is the first former head of state to be found guilty since the Nuremberg Trials – for inciting and aiding and abetting thousands of murders, torture and rape in Sierra Leone’s civil war.
