September 16, 2024: A Day of Thrills and Drama in Major League Baseball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Colt Keith hit a two-run homer, Matt Vierling had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run, and the Detroit Tigers rallied from 4-0 down to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 on Monday night.

Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. thought he had given his team a serious chance at victory with a grand slam, but the Tigers fought hard to come back.

Wenceel Perez drove in two runs for Detroit (78-73), which moved to within a game and a half of the Minnesota Twins for the second spot in the American League draft. The Twins lost Monday night to the Cleveland Guardians.

In addition to his 32nd home run of the season, Witt Jr. added a fifth RBI to his haul of the night with a sacrifice bunt that turned into a single thanks to his speed. It was his 200th hit of the season.

But the Royals (82-69) then wasted opportunities to score more points, much like they had done the day before against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Brenan Hanifee (1-1) was credited with the win for the Tigers, allowing one run in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Jason Foley then went perfect in the ninth inning to record his 24th save of the season, and his second in as many nights.

The loss went to Sam Long (3-2), who allowed three earned runs and got only two outs after taking over for starting pitcher Seth Lugo.

The three-game series between the Central Division rivals continues Tuesday night, when Casey Mize takes the field against Cole Ragans.

The last time he pitched against the Tigers, on May 22, Ragans (11-9) had 12 strikeouts.

Opportunistic Dodgers: 9 pts on 4 hits

Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer against his former team and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 9-0.

Shohei Ohtani was hitless in four at-bats and walked one. He did, however, drive in two runs to bring his RBI total to 108. He didn’t hit a home run or steal a base in the series, sitting at 47 homers and 48 steals as he tries to become the first player in the 50-50 class.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed four hits and two walks in four innings, throwing 72 pitches in his second start since returning from a right arm injury. He threw 59 pitches in his first start on Sept. 10.

The Dodgers didn’t allow a run in their last 15 innings and they had their 13th shutout.

West-leading Los Angeles (89-61) began the night 3.5 games ahead of second-place San Diego.

The Dodgers scored nine runs on just four hits for the second time since 1906: the other time came on June 4, 2021, also in Atlanta. After losing the first two games of the series by a combined 16-3, the Dodgers outscored the Braves 18-2 over the last two games.

The Braves (81-69) were 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position, including 0 for 10 against Yamamoto.

Freeman capped a six-run seventh inning with his 22nd homer.

Marte leads Mets to extra-inning win

Starling Marte hit the winning single in the 10th inning to lead the New York Mets to a big 2-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.

The Mets took a one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the race for the final playoff spot in the National League. The Braves lost 9-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

New York put only two runners past first base through the first seven innings.

In the eighth, however, shortstop Jose Iglesias, replacing the injured Francisco Lindor, tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out single to the infield.

In the 10th, automatic runner Harrison Bader advanced to third base on a fly ball from Francisco Alvarez.

Marte then singled down the left field line off Jacob Barnes (8-3). Bader easily came around to score.
