World Youth Day (WYD), the largest festival of Catholic youth around the world, will be held in Seoul in 2027. On the morning of the 6th (local time), at the dispatch (closing) Mass for the World Youth Day 2023 held in Lisbon, Portugal, Pope Francis announced that “the World Youth Day 2027 will be held in Seoul.”
The World Youth Day is an event founded by Pope John Paul II in 1984 and is held every two to three years touring continents. Hundreds of thousands to millions of young Catholics from all over the world participate in each event, including the Pope himself. 350,000 people from 145 countries officially participated in the Lisbon event, and 1.5 million people, including the general public, attended the closing mass. The World Youth Day has been held 15 times, from Buenos Aires in 1987 to Lisbon.

The Catholic Church in Korea has been attracting bids by attending the Lisbon convention with 10 bishops, including Cardinal Yeom Su-jeong and Archbishop Jeong Sun-taek, the Archbishop of Seoul. Cardinal Yu Heung-sik, Minister of the Holy See, also attended the congress.
As Seoul hosts the 2027 World Youth Day, the pope is expected to visit Korea. Among the previous popes, Pope John Paul II visited Korea in 1984 and 1989, and Pope Francis also visited Korea in 2014 to attend the ‘beatification ceremony with Paul Yun Ji-chung and the 124th rank’ and the ‘Asian Youth Day’.
