Broadcaster Seo Dong-ju revealed the amount of salary he received as an American lawyer.

When asked why Seo Yu-min became a lawyer, Seo Dong-ju replied, “There were two reasons.” Seo Dong-ju said, “When I used to work at a non-profit organization, I worked with many pro bono lawyers at the charity organization and thought, ‘I want to become a great person like that. If I want to change the world, I have to use the law.’ “I decided, ‘I need to know,’” he said. When asked by the production team, “Is it as difficult to become a lawyer in the United States as it is in Korea?” Seo Dong-ju responded, “It is much more difficult to become a lawyer in Korea, and many people say that even taxi drivers in the United States are lawyers.” “When I became a lawyer, there were a lot of comments like that. But it’s not that bad. Honestly, it’s hard. Taking the exam is fundamentally difficult, of course. And the region is important. It depends on which state you take the exam in, and they say California’s bar exam is the hardest.” He elaborated.
Seo Yu-min explained, “In Korea, medical school continues from college to graduate school, and is a 6-year course. In the United States, you go to undergraduate school for 4 years, then go to medical school separately for 4 years, so it’s a total of 8 years.”
Seo Dong-ju said, “For an American lawyer, working overtime is standard. I work a lot on the weekends as well. I don’t often leave work. In response to a question about the difference between Korean and American lawyers, Seo Dong-ju answered, “Wouldn’t American lawyers be higher than Korean lawyers? I think my salary was higher.” He continued, “Because I worked at a large law firm, and my starting salary was $190,000 (about KRW 250 million). But they deducted half of the taxes. I feel like I’m being taken away for giving a little.” Seo Yu-min said, “That’s right. Taxes vary depending on annual salary, and taxes are slightly different depending on the state.”
