Daily walking contributes to cardiovascular health. A recent American study specifies that this is also true when these walks are carried out following 70 years. And that it doesn’t take much to see a positive impact for the heart.
Walking is good for your health. The scientific proof has been made for a long time. And studies continue to refine how and under what conditions this practice improves our cardiovascular health in particular. In this process, a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health recently wanted to determine if walking might protect the cardiovascular health of seniors. Especially if this activity is practiced following 70 years.
To do this, the researchers followed 452 participants in the cohort Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC). Aged 78 on average, they wore an accelerometer, allowing them to count the number of daily steps. During the 3.5 years of follow-up, 7.5% of the participants suffered from a cardiovascular event: coronary artery disease, stroke or heart failure.
Little effort for a big benefit
The result turned out to be even more interesting than expected since a limited number of steps offers significant benefits. In detail, compared to participants who took less than 2,000 steps per day, those who walked 4,500 steps had a 77% reduced risk of suffering a cardiovascular event.
And every additional 500 steps was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. “We were surprised by such a benefit for the heart with so little effort required”, says lead author Erin E. Dooley.
So if you’re over 70, try to take 500 more steps each day. It is the equivalent of 400 meters. You can also use a pedometer that will count for you.
