Ukraine’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said on the 19th that Ukraine must win the war with Russia before winter to prevent Russia from fighting for a long time.
“For us, it is very important not to extend the front into winter. After winter, Russia will have more time to attack and conquer,” Yermak told Ukrainian weekly newspaper Novoye Vremya, according to Agence France-Presse. , the situation is definitely going to get tougher. It’s important for us not to give them that possibility.”
He reiterated Kyiv’s view that Western allies should supply more weapons, and said he was now counting on U.S. commitments to await billions of dollars worth of weapons and economic support.
The Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act signed in May by U.S. President Biden in order to speed up aid to Ukraine will take full effect from next month.
“Our goal is victory,” Yermak said, adding that talks with Russia at this stage are only regarding how to export Ukrainian grain from blocked ports, not how to end the conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion in February.
“These negotiations are taking place at the level of the military and foreign affairs councils under the central coordination of the United Nations,” Yermak said.
“I have contacts with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, I do not communicate with the Russians,” he stressed.
