Program and Position Overview
The Program currently has three key objectives:
- Accelerate access to comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) care through transformational and sustainable service delivery techniques in Ghana, India, and Nigeria.
- Enhance both local and international access to critical diagnostics and hydroxyurea, with a focus on reducing their costs via market-shaping strategies.
- Fortify the SCD ecosystem aimed at improving and sustaining the quality of SCD care while mitigating financial and other risks faced by health ministries, donors, and essential stakeholders.
CHAI is seeking an exceptionally qualified Senior Program Manager to oversee all facets of this program. This individual will closely work with CHAI’s cross-cutting teams, country teams, and significant external partners and donors to ensure the successful delivery of all program goals. Key performance metrics include:
- Number of children under five screened, diagnosed, enrolled, initiated, and retained in care, treated with quality-assured hydroxyurea.
- Registration of quality-assured, affordable diagnostics commodities and hydroxyurea in-country.
- Support for national SCD sustainability endeavours and expansion of international donor investments.
The ideal candidate must possess exceptional organizational and program management skills, with a proven track record managing complex international initiatives. They will need to create and manage work plans, as well as monitor and report on program milestones, timelines, and deliverables. The ability to execute risk mitigation strategies effectively is essential.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required, along with strong diplomatic skills to facilitate interactions within a multicultural professional environment. Proven analytical skills and the ability to manage a diverse range of external relationships, generate and finalize donor reports, and handle complex budgets are critical for this role.

This Senior Program Manager will report directly to CHAI’s Global Health Research Fellow. The base location is flexible within a CHAI program country in sub-Saharan Africa or select countries facing SCD challenges, including Benin, Cameroon, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Nigeria, or Zambia, subject to approval by country leadership. The role will require travel up to approximately 25% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Lead program management and reporting for the SCD initiative with the support of their supervisor.
- Oversee, coordinate, and develop inputs for routine reporting and donor updates, as well as addressing ad hoc reporting needs by reviewing and consolidating inputs from various CHAI teams.
- Assist the SCD Leadership Team in fostering a collaborative atmosphere by facilitating the exchange of information, drafting meeting agendas and materials, and ensuring effective meeting organization and follow-ups.
- Establish strong working relationships with critical stakeholders across government and non-governmental organizations focused on relevant SCD sustainability goals.
- Facilitate strategic collaborations with numerous internal teams, external stakeholders, and donors to drive Program objectives and enable cross-organizational coordination and execution.
- Create clear presentations and reports to effectively communicate findings and recommendations for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as an effective representative for CHAI in presentations and forums concerning SCD.
- Collaborate with their program supervisor to adapt responsibilities in alignment with the evolving demands of The Program.
- Undertake any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
In addition to the capabilities outlined above:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with ten years of work experience; or an Advanced Degree or equivalent with at least eight years of work experience; or comparable work experience.
- Proven experience managing complex programs and providing strategic guidance within the global health sector.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement capabilities, with a successful history of building and maintaining relationships in diverse environments.
- Experience in leading teams to achieve high-impact results effectively.
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management tools like MS Project or Smartsheet, along with strong data visualization skills.
