The action of the Liège branch of this independent citizen movement, which fights in particular so that seniors and future generations can age with dignity, began around 2:00 p.m. at the terminal of the future tram, located rue Dieudonné Defrance in Liège . For around twenty minutes, the seniors sang songs carrying their demands in this highly symbolic place.
“We fight for the right to a life worthy of seniors, but also of future generations, and all our actions take place in a slightly festive mode, with a chasuble, the flower in the hat, while singing,” explained Bernadette Kinet, the secretary.
The group especially points to mobility problems for seniors in the fiery city, as the elections approach. “If an elderly person wants to go to the cinema or the theater, there is no public transport for the return, for example. We ask for social taxis, for pedestrian paths to be more secure,” said Bernadette Kinet. , aimed at politicians.
Other issues are the subject of concern for the collective, such as the low amount of pensions, the increase in the digital divide, the disappearance of the seniors ticket at the SNCB in 2025 or even the feeling of being considered ” sub-citizens.
“Here we are in 2024, an election year. To the political parties, our experience tells us that you are going to make promises that you do not intend to keep. Change gear, it is time to refinance public services” , estimated Eliane Rulmont, coordinator.
