Senegal’s Impactful Development Programs: PUDC, PUMA, and PROMOVILLES

Dakar, Dec 24 (APS) – The Minister of Community Development, National Solidarity and Social and Territorial Equity Thérèse Faye Diouf praised the impact of PUDC, PUMA and PROMOVILLES on the daily lives of populations.

”In terms of performance, the three territorial equity programs have, through their interventions, had a positive impact on the daily lives of the populations,” she declared, emphasizing that the number of jobs generated by the PUDC, the PUMA and PROMOVILLES totaled 90,776 as of September 30, 2023.

Thérèse Faye Diouf spoke at the last meeting of the single steering committee of the three programs implemented by the Senegalese government.

The objective of the meeting was to “set the strategic orientations of the programs and their operational framework of interventions and to ensure the efficiency of the implementation of the programs”, explained the minister, adding that it was also question of ”submitting for adoption by the members the revised administrative, financial and accounting procedure manual of Promovilles”.

Among the achievements, Ms. Diouf cited 827 km of access roads, 328 drinking water supply systems and 857 electrified villages including 539 as part of the electrification project of 2000 villages by the PUDC, the Emergency Program of communautary development.

PUMA, the Emergency Program for the Modernization of Border Axes and Territories, has completed 249 km of tracks, 5 basic social works, electrified 97 border localities and opened up 284 villages.

This program intended for border areas has 14 security infrastructures to its credit. It enabled the resettlement of 261 families, notably in Ziguinchor (south) and Kédougou (south-east) in addition to supporting the issuance of 33,910 civil status documents.

In urban and peri-urban areas, Promovilles, the Cities Modernization Program, has completed 197.6 km of roads for the benefit of 3 million people, 123 km of lighting network with 3,998 street lamps. Added to this are training and integration programs for young people with, to date, 1,547 young people trained in construction and 1,809 young people recruited, according to Thérèse Faye Diouf.

The minister assured that the year 2024 promises to be a strengthening of achievements to achieve the objectives assigned to her department.

The annual budget of Promovilles in 2024 is 32,057,571,249 CFA francs, that of the PUDC is estimated at 50,024,251,898 CFA francs, said Ms. Diouf, adding that the funds allocated to PUMA are estimated at 8,022,000,000 CFA francs.
