The Minister of Oil and Energy, Antoine Félix Abdoulaye Diome, paid this Thursday, December 28, a visit to the site of the national electricity dispatching center of Mbao to learn regarding the installation, but also to recognize the efforts made in this strategic sector.

The minister, following taking a look at the different installations, during his press briefing, reviewed the significant advances that have been noted in this energy sector, from independence to the present day. “Since 2012, you have seen that there has been a tripling of everything that was done from 1960 to that date on installed production capacities. For Senelec there was around 500 megawatt (MW) for the highways of the electricity which are used to transport electrical energy and we were also regarding 500 kilometers away.

So, today in 2023 we are at an installed production capacity of 1,789 megawatts and 1,752 kilometers of highways,” said Antoine Diome, Minister of Oil and Energy, specifying that it is for this reason that we was able to see that there is no longer any load shedding in Senegal. We are even exporting electricity to sister countries.

Still in this chapter of Senelec’s performances, he also recalled that where we had difficulty having electricity 24/7. Where certain areas, especially rural areas, were not provided with electricity. “Senelec has major rural electrification programs in its portfolio. This is what made it possible to go from a rate in 2012 of 24% to 61% of electrification in rural areas. And in urban areas, we are practically at universal access with a rate of 98%”, he rejoiced, thus citing the modernization of the production tool but also of all the tools across the chain from the offer to on demand.

The minister also took advantage of the visit to congratulate the agents of the national electricity company of Senegal through their general director, Pape Mademba Biteye who is doing exceptional work under the leadership of his excellency the president of the Republic Macky Sall. He also underlined the merit of the engineer, Abou Samba Ba, who voluntarily implemented software which revolutionizes the way of monitoring flows within the framework of an interconnected West African system.
