Touba, July 20 (APS) – The Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, visited Touba (center) on Saturday to provide government support to the populations of neighborhoods affected by heavy rains in recent days. APS reported this.
“I have come to visit the populations of certain districts of Touba affected by flooding for several days following the accumulated rains,” he said.
He made the statement at the end of his visit to Touba where he was greeted by the governor of the Diourbel region, Ibrahima Fall, the mayor of Touba, Abdou Lahat Ka, and representatives of regional, departmental, and municipal services.
During his visit, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye showed particular interest in the Nguiranène neighborhood, which was among the most severely affected areas. He expressed solidarity from the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, the entire government, and the Senegalese people to the affected residents. He assured them that the authorities would “always be at their side.”
He acknowledged that “it was not possible for the new government to resolve all the recurring problems in a few months,” but announced that measures would be taken to alleviate the difficulties of the population.
Cheikh Tidiane Dièye personally inspected the progress of ongoing work in front of the town hall of Touba, indicating that the work would be accelerated this week to clear the two access roads to the holy city.
He also visited the Nguélémou basin, where he stated that work, previously interrupted due to delayed payments to companies, had resumed following an urgent release of funds. “Today, this work is being accelerated,” he expressed his satisfaction.
In Keur Niang, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye inspected the pumping station and the retention basin. The pumping capacity of the basin would be increased from 2,800 m³ to 6,000 m³ within the next two to three days. He emphasized the need to increase this capacity as soon as possible to mitigate floods and provide relief to the populations.
Finally, the minister commended the resilience of the inhabitants of Touba, particularly the young people who were mobilizing to help the community by pumping water and cleaning flooded areas.
Cheikh Tidiane Dièye announced a donation of pumping equipment and materials to support them and planned to meet with several associations of the religious city in Dakar, to develop an action plan complementary to the existing plan, implemented under the authority of the governor with the support of the mayor and all local stakeholders.
“We will always be at their side,” the minister concluded, stressing the importance of solidarity and cooperation to overcome current challenges.
