The two Senegalese representatives who competed in the World Athletics Championships, which were held from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, might not bring back the shadow of a medal. Senegal was proudly defended by two sporting talents, namely Louis-François Mendy in the 110 meter hurdles event, and Sangoné Kandji in the triple jump event.
These two athletes had chosen Europe as their fitness ground, actively participating in various competitions. Their meticulous preparation was placed in the expert hands of their coaches. After their participation in the Games of La Francophonie, Mendy and Kandji had taken the road to France to continue their training for this major event.

Building on his success as the Games of La Francophonie champion, Mendy clinched qualification for the Worlds with a remarkable time of 13s18 at the Troyes Aube international meeting in France, which took place last July. On the other hand, Kandji did not reach the qualification criteria required for the Worlds. However, it should be noted that her place in the competition was earned thanks to her title of African triple jump champion, obtained at the 2022 African Championships in Saint-Pierre, Mauritius, as clarified by the Colonel Sara Oualy, president of the Senegalese Athletics Federation.
At the time of the balance sheet, Senegal returns empty-handed. Louis-François Mendy was eliminated for a false start in the semi-final. It is undoubtedly a big disappointment for this specialist in the 110m hurdles who, however, managed a good performance to climb to this stage of the competition. As for Sangoné Kandji, the triple jump specialist, she finished last in her qualifying series with a jump of 12m82.

Paris 2024 is looming and these world championships in Budapest do not bode well for Senegal. In addition to being under-represented, Senegal seems not to take into account the geopolitical and economic issues related to athletics. At a time when the countries of West Africa, including Côte d’Ivoire, are well represented and compete at the top level, we are still looking for our bearings.
