“Sending inspectors under consideration” –

Rita Cavallaro

The Meloni-mail case ends up in Parliament, with the Keeper of the Seals’ harsh criticism of the assault on the government by the red robes. At the center of Minister Carlo Nordio’s question time is the scoop from , that email in which the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Marco Patarnello, defined the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as much more dangerous than Silvio Berlusconi, because «she has no judicial investigations under her belt loaded and therefore does not move for personal interests but for fair political visions which makes it much stronger. And it also makes his action much more dangerous, having as its objective the rewriting of the entire jurisdiction and not simply a safe conduct.” Words from a big figure in the Democratic Judiciary, the left-wing current accustomed to advancing investigations with the political opponent, which have heightened the clash between the government and the robes. And on which, yesterday, Nordio intervened decisively: «The letter sent on the email arouses no small astonishment and as a former magistrate it also arouses a certain pain», the Keeper of the Seals said to the deputies at Montecitorio, responding to a question from the group leader of FdI to the Chamber on initiatives in relation to the Patarnello affair. «To state that the Prime Minister, precisely because he has no ongoing judicial investigations against him, is a greater danger than that of the Honorable Berlusconi and we must remedy this, are sentences of a serious nature that must be taken into consideration».

The anti-government judge must resign. The League against Patarnello

The Keeper of the Seals therefore announced that the matter of Patarnello’s email is now “under examination to verify the prerequisites for the exercise of the inspection powers that the law reserves to the Minister of Justice”. In short, Nordio could intervene in the case that sparked the scandal and strengthened the declarations of Silvio Berlusconi himself, the politician most persecuted by the judges who raised the alarm about the red robes, defining them as the armed wing of the left incapable of winning at the polls. «It is very indicative, due to the origin of this statement, of the institutional climate that our democracy experiences», added Nordio, placing emphasis on the fact that «President Meloni was elected by the people and the judge’s task is only to apply the law, much less try to remedy the result of the popular will”. And again: «It is necessary to know how to exercise mediation and synthesis skills and this is an essential part of democratic life, since the institutions belong to and respond to the entire community and everyone must be able to recognize themselves».

The strategy of the robes, thus Patarnello's plan is put into practice

Finally, the Keeper of the Seals recalled the judiciary of a time too far away, before Tangentopoli and the excessive power of the currents. «When I entered the judiciary in 1976, the judiciary, the prestige of the judiciary, enjoyed the consensus of over 80 percent of Italian citizens, equal to and sometimes superior to that of the Catholic Church», specified the minister. “Today it crashed, out of respect for my former colleagues I don’t even want to mention it”, he added with regret, concluding the question time in the Chamber with what he defined as a “bitter assessment”. Foti then spoke on the matter: «If someone wants to engage in politics, and no one denies that a magistrate can do so, he should do so, but by leaving the position he currently holds and not using it to exercise a political role within the judiciary”, and defined Nordio’s intervention as “extremely punctual”, specifying that “we are not seeking revenge against anyone, but we only ask that the judge be and remain a third party according to the Constitution”. Finally, it’s chaos among the robes. The president of the ANM attempts to rebalance the category split by Patarnello’s political manifesto: «There is no danger – guarantees Giuseppe Santalucia – The term “dangerous” is absolutely not adequate. Patarnello’s statement is open to misunderstanding.” And he adds: «The Prime Minister is never an adversary to be stopped or fought, but an institutional interlocutor to be respected».
