Senave frees import of tomatoes from root growth at regional level

Asunción, IP Agency.- The National Service for Plant and Seed Quality and Health (Senave) ordered the release for the importation of tomatoes, as a result of the increase in the price of the product at the regional level due to adverse climatic issues.

This was reported by the president of Senave, Pastor Soria, during an interview with a radio station.

He highlighted that “the main reason for the increase in price is Paraguay’s difficulty in importing the product, due to very adverse climatic phenomena, whether drought or flooding at the regional level.”

He stressed that “in Argentina and Brazil the price of tomatoes is very expensive. It had a lot of rain and in many areas it was not possible to enter to take out the production; while in Brazil, it is produced only for domestic consumption and there is almost no left for export. The issue of price in our market depends exclusively on what is available in Argentina and Brazil and what the producer can get,” he highlighted.

MAG analyzes strategic technical measures

“At the system level of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock we are planning what the technical-strategic measure would be, so that we have a higher tomato production per month. It surprises me that everyone talks about tomatoes, but if you look closely, the price of onions, of locote, is also very high,” he added.

Not only the price of tomatoes skyrocketed, which is between 22,000 and 25,000 guaraníes per kilo, but also practically all fruit and vegetable items, he added.

At this point he clarified that “only tomatoes are regulated by the Marketing Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, which is planning the technical measure,” Soria stressed.

Request from importers

Soria also reported that “the importers presented a note requesting the release of the import of the product, alleging that prices are quite high in both Argentina and Brazil.”

He said that “some 57 importers of fruit and vegetable products are authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Afidis should be given to them to regulate the cost of tomatoes, which were marketed at around 200 thousand kilos per day for consumption.”

He maintained that “it was regulated in such a way so that national producers also have space to sell and up to 10 Afidis were given per day. At the time the release was authorized, Senave granted more than 50 Afidis and today it will be analyzed whether the price of tomatoes drops,” he said.

He also highlighted that small producers receive about 10,000 to 15,000 kilos of tomatoes per week, when the market demand is 200,000, he admitted.

At this point he mentioned that due to the adverse conditions in our country there will be sufficient production only starting in May.
