The senator for Ñuble and head of the UDI bench, Gustavo Sanhueza, announced the presentation of a bill that seeks to increase the minimum age to be elected as President of the Republic of Chile to 40 years.

This initiative arises in response “to the concern regarding the lack of political and life experience in the government,” as expressed by the legislator.

“Chile has gone backwards in these two years, and one of the reasons seen in the surveys and to which citizens attribute is the inexperience of the President of the Republic,” stated the legislator.

The unionism proposal seeks to ensure that those who hold the Presidential position have a vital and political career that allows them to lead effectively.

“We need people who, when they are in government, have lived and have a life experience that can also be transferred to the political world,” Sanhueza emphasized.

The announcement came amid criticism of the Government of President Boric by the UDI, especially in relation to a perception of regression in the country.

The proposal was previously discussed and rejected in the Constitutional Council, where it was promoted by the Republican Party.

There, he did not obtain enough votes due to the abstention of Chile Vamos councilors.

On that occasion, the ruling party stated that the rule “had a first and last name,” since it would have affected the election of President Gabriel Boric (who is currently 38), although not an eventual re-election, given that these cannot be consecutive.

For the Communist Party, it also left Segegog’s minister, Camila Vallejo (35), one of its potential presidential cards out of the race, the same argument that has now resurfaced with the UDI’s attack.

Regular life pension of mandatarios

In parallel to this project, in the Chamber of Deputies, and within the framework of the discussion of the pension reform, deputy Carlos Bianchi (ind.) proposed that former presidents, once they turn 65, request a pension from the State. of old age; not like now, which governs as soon as they leave office. Furthermore, he called on President Boric to sponsor the initiative.

“The main characteristic of this reform that we are carrying out has to do with establishing equality in the conditions under which any Chilean man and woman must retire, and this in Chile is established from 65 years for men, and 60 years for women,” said Deputy Bianchi.

The parliamentarian stressed that “it is completely unpresentable, given that we have not even been able to bring regarding a pension reform from this Congress itself, for former presidents to receive a pension for life, equivalent to 35 times the Universal Guaranteed Pension.”

Asked regarding this last point on ADN radio, where he addressed the pension reform, President Boric stated that “he would not be referring to a situation that would affect him personally.”

In both proposals – increasing the minimum age to run for President and regulating the lifetime pension of leaders – the common factor is the veiled criticism of the age of the current head of state, Gabriel Boric, who turned 38 last February.

Although he has already completed the first half of his term, there are still voices that question his youth, and the trend in the world and in Latin America supports the Broad Front, as is the case of Nayib Bukele (42, but took office at 37) in The Savior; Daniel Noboa (36), in Ecuador; and Emmanuel Macron, (46, but took office at 39), in France.
