Senator: Israel used an American-made bomb to kill Nasrallah

United States – A US Senator said on Sunday that the bomb Israel used to kill Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week was an American-made guided bomb.

Mark Kelly, Chairman of the Air Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said during an interview with NBC that Israel used the Mark 84 bomb, weighing 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). This is the first American statement about the type of weapon used in the attack.

Kelly added, “We are monitoring the increasing use of guided munitions… joint direct attack munitions… and we continue to provide these weapons… That two-thousand-pound bomb that was used to eliminate Nasrallah is a Mark 84 bomb.”

The Israeli army said on Saturday that it had eliminated Nasrallah in a bombing of the group’s central command headquarters in the southern suburb of Beirut. The Israeli army refused to disclose the weapons used in the attack. It has not been possible to obtain comment from the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) yet.

Joint Direct Attack Munitions convert ordinary unguided bombs into guided weapons using wings and a GPS-based guidance system.

The United States is Israel’s long-time ally and its largest arms supplier.
