Senate rejected project for prisoners over 70 to serve their sentence at home – La Discusión 2024-02-21 21:00:40

The Senate rejected the bill that seeks to allow prisoners over 70 years of age or who have a terminal illness to serve their sentence with alternative prison measures.

The initiative, promoted by Chile Vamos, sought to regulate the alternative fulfillment of custodial sentences so that people who suffer from a terminal illness, serious physical impairment, or who are of a certain age, can serve their sentences at home.

The decision was made with 21 votes in favor and 23 against, in a session marked by protests from relatives of missing detainees.

Considering the possible benefit to criminals against humanity, the socialist Fidel Espinoza – son of Luis Espinoza, who died at the hands of a former police officer during the dictatorship – highlighted that “the Senate has said no to impunity, no to rights violators. humans, not those who committed crimes against humanity, who attacked the lives of thousands of our compatriots in the most atrocious ways that the history of our country has ever known.”

In turn, Juan Ignacio Latorre (RD) warned that “the right did not have the votes, they only made a political point; They were approved by a circumstantial majority in the Human Rights Commission but in the Chamber, as a quorum required, it was not approved and I value that, because we are also just coming out of the commemoration of the 50 years of the coup d’état.”

The Senate rejected the right-wing project to release convicted criminals and send them home when they reach a certain age, regardless of the crime committed.

Although he voted in favor, UDI senator Iván Moreira questioned the structure of the initiative, and stated that “you cannot play and deceive people, especially those people who are in Punta Peuco.”
