CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WTAP) – A Wood County lawmaker is trying to get a bill passed that would put the national motto in public schools across the state.

Senator Mike Azinger’s (R – Wood, Dist. 3) Senate Bill 152 was introduced to the state senate on Wednesday. The bill would require the national motto of “In God We Trust” be displayed in every public school and public university building in West Virginia.

Senator Azinger said the bill is common sensical and shouldn’t be controversial. “It should be ubiquitous,” Azinger said. “It should be already in the classroom. And it came into being in the Eisenhower administration. It’s never had a problem in the courts at all. And this is just something that’s very exciting to me and I think a lot of members will be getting on board.”

Azinger said he wants the national motto in every classroom in the state. The language of the bill as it was introduced doesn’t specify displaying the motto in each classroom, only in each building on a given campus.

SB 152 was referred to the Senate Education Committee, which Azinger is a member of.
