A fire broke out on Wednesday August 23 in a wooded area located in the Semnoz massif, on the border between Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Several dozen firefighters assisted by two water bomber helicopters are on site. More than three hectares burned.
A fire broke out this Wednesday, August 23 at the end of the morning, in the Mont Semnoz sector, on the border between the departments of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. According to firefighters, the fire started in the town of Allèves at an altitude of around 1,200 meters.
Haute-Savoie firefighters have been on site since midday in an area that is difficult to access. At 5 p.m., the emergency services indicated that three hectares had already gone up in smoke but that the situation was “under control”.
A command post has been established in the town of Allèves (Haute-Savoie). In total, more than 70 firefighters are on site this Wednesday followingnoon, including specialists “forest and natural area fires”say the relief in a press release.
Twenty vehicles are on site. Two helicopters are also engaged on the scene and multiply the round trips with a water drop device. “The conditions of intervention are made complex by the difficulties of access to the disaster and the extreme temperatures”say the firefighters.

In a press release published shortly before 7 p.m., the Haute-Savoie prefecture indicates that “the fire is no longer progressing, however the actions of struggle and flooding of the soil will continue all night”.
She recalls that “The current weather conditions (heat wave episode and significant lack of precipitation for several weeks), combined with the difficult drought conditions in the department generate a very significant risk of forest fires in Haute-Savoie” and calls for everyone’s vigilance and responsibility.
In recent days, the Haute-Savoie firefighters have been regularly called to the front of the flames. A forest fire had already broken out on Monday August 21 in the town of Alex. Nearly twenty firefighters had been mobilized for a fire of nearly 500 square meters.
Also on Monday, August 21, firefighters intervened in the Mont Salève sector, located in Geneva, to extinguish a burning stump which threatened to fall below in a wooded area. A dozen firefighters were dispatched to the scene to put out the flames and flood the area.
Thus for ten days, several other fires have been identified by the prefecture of Haute-Savoie:
August 21: fire at Alex (500 m2); August 21: fire in Beaumont, Salève sector; August 20: fire at La Balme-de-Thuy (700 m2); August 17: fire at La Balme-de-Thuy (450 m2); August 17: fire in Marcellaz-Albanais (5,000 m2); August 16: fire in Feterne following the fire of a heavy goods vehicle; August 14: fire in Chamonix (100 m2).
