Huawei recently launched the Mate 60 Pro mobile phone. Many people are not only concerned regarding whether the mobile phone supports 5G network, but also curious regarding the brain of the mobile phone: the Kirin 9000s chip. Recently, China Central Television interviewed Dan Hutcheson, vice president of TechInsights, a semiconductor industry observation organization, with 40 years of relevant experience, to evaluate the Kirin 9000s chip. On the other hand, TechInsights official website also has more comments on Kirin 9000s.
According to TechInsights’ official website, the Kirin 9000s chip size is 107mm², which is 2% larger than the Kirin 9000 chip size (105mm²). From various identifying features on the Kirin 9000s chip, the team concluded that the chip was manufactured by SMIC.
On the other hand, through additional measurements of critical dimensions (CD) on the Kirin 9000s wafer, including logic gate pitch, fin pitch, and bottom back end (BEOL) metallization pitch, the analysis team concluded that the Kirin 9000s wafer has the following Characteristics of wafers produced by the 7nm process.
As for the vice president of TechInsights, Dan Hutcheson also commented on the Kirin 9000s chip. He believes that the chip has reached a world-class quality level, but compared with today’s most advanced chips, the gap remains in the “2 to 2.5 node” range. The meaning of “2 to 2.5 nodes” among them, according to Lu Tingjie, executive vice chairman of the China Information Economics Association, a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, probably means that there is still a gap of 3 to 5 years between Kirin 9000s chips and the most advanced 5G chips.
