The Secretary of Medical Education (SEM) of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM applied the practical phase of the Evaluation of Academic Advancement I (EAA-I) to a total of 1,786 students of the Faculty of Medicine and 699 students of schools of the System Incorporated into the Highest House of Studies, among which are the Villa Rica University, the Olmeca University, the Ixtlahuaca University, the Westhill University, the Intermedical School of Medicine of Pachuca, the Siglo XXI University Center and Saint Luke School of Medicine .
On behalf of Dr. Germán Fajardo Dolci, Director of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ana Carolina Sepúlveda Vildósola, Faculty academic and treasurer of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico, addressed the young people to wish them the best in the evaluation. and highlighted the importance of these formative and integrative diagnostic evaluations for the training of the students of the Surgeon Degree, since it brings them closer to the solution of the health problems that patients present in our country and evaluates the degree of scope of the Competences indicated in the Study Plan 2010 (PE 2010).
Also, he emphasized the values that characterize health professionals and invited students to answer the EAA-I as accurately and honestly as possible, since these evaluations are a great opportunity to identify their strengths and academic needs, and receive feedback, in addition to preparing them for the Professional Examination.
The practical phase was held on May 25 in the “Dr. Raoul Fournier Villada” and, on that occasion, Dr. Armando Ortiz Montalvo, Head of the SEM, pointed out that the EAA I focuses on verifying the achievement of the Competencies of the students who pass from the second to the third year; since this evaluation explores the application of knowledge in clinical situations, especially in terms of knowledge of the components of the clinical history, the use of the information contained therein, the approach to the problem presented by the patient in the clinical situation and the search relevant information for the solution of these problems.
He also commented that to carry out the test, the students were divided into three shifts and used computers Chromebooks laptops that the UNAM PC-Puma program gave to the Faculty of Medicine: “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to develop new assessment models, such as the EAA I Integrative Multiformat Exam, which they responded on the platform Moodle and it was hosted on the servers of the General Directorate of Computing and Information and Communication Technologies of the UNAM”.
Upon entering the platform, the students visualized an environment that simulates a rotation through four clinics, and at each of the stations they were presented with a medical consultation with a health problem: “We use audiovisual resources, heart sounds, images, audio, interviews with the patients, we put the findings of the physical examination or the auxiliary laboratory tests, and as these parts of the medical consultation are presented to them, they answer the 32 multiple-choice, ranking, completion, and two-step questions,” he explained. He also mentioned that at the end of the test they are given immediate feedback, so that at that moment the students know if they are on the scale of excellent, good, sufficient or insufficient. Finally, they answered a self-assessment of 6 questions that helps to know the impression of the student community regarding the exam, the feedback and the support and learning materials provided by the Faculty of Medicine.
The practical phase of the EAA I, because it is formative, does not affect the average of the students, it provides them with information to know the level they have reached in the acquisition of six of the eight competences consigned in the PE 2010: 1. Critical thinking , clinical judgment, decision making and information management; 3. Effective communication; 4. Knowledge and application of biomedical, sociomedical and clinical sciences in the practice of Medicine; 5. Clinical diagnostic, prognostic, treatment and rehabilitation skills; 6. Professionalism, ethical aspects and legal responsibilities; and 7. Population health and health systems: health promotion and disease prevention.
Finally, Dr. Ortiz Montalvo thanked the SEM staff and the different areas of both the Faculty of Medicine and UNAM for their commitment and the great work they did to make this evaluation a success.
