Taking selfies – also called selfies – may have become a dangerous activity, according to a recent study.
As taking photos in breathtaking landscapes continues to grow in popularity, more and more people are getting injured or even killed trying to capture the perfect scene to share with their friends.
The study carried out by the University of New South Wales revealed that aquatic locations were the scene of several deaths, mainly in picturesque and photogenic areas. Four in five people believe there are more incidents of falls from heights due to photo-taking, Fox News reported. Drowning was the second most common cause.
The researchers first focused on accidents related to selfies taken in nature.
“I wasn’t thinking regarding people being injured by taking selfies on man-made structures or train lines, for example,” explained the study’s lead author and researcher at the University’s Sydney School of Public Health. of Sydney, Sam Cornell, in an email to Fox News.
The study also made it possible to establish a more precise profile of the victims of this type of accident, mainly tourists aged on average 22 years old.
“I was surprised to find that […] young women were the most involved,” Mr. Cornell added.
Ultimately, researchers came to the conclusion that this might be a public health problem requiring an adequate response.
“To date, little attention has been paid to preventing selfie-related incidents through behavior change methodologies or direct messaging to users, including through social media applications,” they wrote .
