According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he hopes that a peace summit can be held in the autumn. The forthcoming meeting in Saudi Arabia is a step on the way there, Zelenskyj told Ukrainian diplomats on Wednesday. Representatives from almost 40 countries are now expected to attend. According to earlier media reports, the meeting will take place in Jeddah over the weekend.

According to diplomats, the meeting is to take place at the level of the national security advisers. Representatives from Ukraine, the USA, the EU, Great Britain as well as Chile, Indonesia, Egypt and Turkey are expected, according to the diplomats. Russia will not participate. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Monday that the US government supported the meeting.

At the meeting, Ukraine is concerned with implementing the “peace formula” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a solution to the conflict. The core of the formula is the demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. According to diplomats in Riyadh, a Russian peace plan is also likely to be discussed. He demands that Ukraine “recognize borders following the end of the war before the start of any negotiations”. Saudi Arabia had condemned Russia’s aggression once morest Ukraine, but continues to work with Russia – for example as part of the OPEC+ oil price cartel.

Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed pessimism regarding the prospects for a solution to the conflict. Brazil is trying to find peace, but neither Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin nor Zelenskyy are ready, Lula told the foreign press on Wednesday. There are proposals for peace declarations should Russia and Ukraine want to negotiate. “Neither Putin nor Zelenskyy are ready for peace.”
