Sekou Doumbouya will return to the G League on the side of the Delaware Blue Coats, a team affiliated with the Sixers. A new chance for the Frenchman to prove that he is not yet lost for the NBA, following a more than complicated start to his career.
We are used to talking regarding stars at 40 minutes per game, back-ups at 25, and guys struggling to scratch 10 minutes in the NBA. We sometimes forget that even the latter are among the lucky ones, and that behind many struggle, oscillating between the big League, the G League and the no league at all. This is the case of Sekou Doumbouya, whose fifteenth place in the 2019 draft has not yet been justified, far from it. But good news may have arrived for the Frenchie. The Sixers have thus decided to sign him to cut him in stride, in order to send him to their affiliated team in the G League.. An operation which aims to grant the rights to the player in order to be able to call him in the NBA if necessary. Common practice in the League a few days before the start of the 2022-23 season.
And this may well be the last chance for Sekou Doumbouya in the NBA. For his rookie season with the Detroit Pistons, he had nevertheless achieved some great things: 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 19.8 minutes, not exceptional but not all newcomers to the League are capable of it, and we also remember a month of January during which he had farted so much that he was predicted a brilliant future. Subsequently the soufflé had fallen and he had above all succeeded in imposing himself in the G League when he was sent there: 17.4 points at 58% shooting and 35% from afar, 5.5 rebounds in 27 minutes per game with the Grand Rapids Drive, much better as a stat line. Problem, he had failed to progress and his second season had been below the first. The Pistons then sent him to the Houston Rockets, who cut him straight. In 2021-22, he then dragged his sentence between the Lakers, for whom he played two games and scored 14 points, and their G League side South Bay, where he also failed to win. Sekou will therefore have a new chance in Pennsylvania, and soon to be 22, he will have to do more and better if he wants to find the NBA floors.
Sekou Doumbouya will have the opportunity to show he can still play at the highest level but he has a ways to go if he wants the Sixers to give him a chance. A long way.
