ALGIERS – The control services under the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion carried out, during the first seven months of 2023, more than 120,000 interventions resulting in the seizure of more than 870 tons of goods, indicates a report from the ministry.

Among the products seized within the framework of the fight once morest illicit speculation are subsidized edible oil (130,359 litres), subsidized milk (9,132 litres), semolina (162.80 tonnes), flour (213.94 tonnes ), sugar (37.61 tons), bananas, apple, onion and potato (312.66 tons) and 23,590 eggs (786 trays).

According to the report, these interventions were carried out at the level of retailers for 76%, wholesalers for 18%, production units for 6% and importers for 1%.

These interventions, carried out in coordination with the security services, are carried out in application of the provisions of Law 21-15 of December 28, 2021, relating to the fight once morest illicit speculation.

During the first seven months of 2023, the control services carried out nearly 1.27 million interventions which made it possible to record 124,462 fines (+1% compared to 2022), and to draw up 118,195 lawsuits. legal proceedings (+8%), with the proposal to close 8,502 commercial premises (-18).

Under these operations, goods with an overall value of 1.33 billion DA (+27%) were seized and a hidden turnover, estimated at 32.82 billion DA (+42%), was unveiled.

The ministry pointed out that its control services carried out 26,396 cargo control operations at the border (-18% compared to the first seven months of 2022), of which 364 were turned back (-19%), because containing products not -compliant.

It is a quantity of 48,137 tons worth 10.47 billion DA, indicates the same source, citing 12 official reports drawn up and sent to the competent courts.

The same services established 25,988 decisions to reject products (-18%), weighing 13.89 million tonnes and worth 1283 billion DA.

The ministry explained the decline in the volume of cargoes by the tightening of border control procedures, as part of the Government’s guidelines aimed at controlling foreign trade and rationalizing imports.

Regarding cases of non-compliance with the rules applied to the transport of food and drink products, some 14,374 interventions were recorded between January and July 2023, in collaboration with, among others, the national police and gendarmerie services, the establishment of 460 offences, 441 lawsuits, in addition to the seizure of 61.57 tons of goods, worth 28.98 million Da, according to the balance sheet.
