Robin Seidl and Moritz Pristauz missed out on reaching the round of 16 at the European Beach Volleyball Championships on Vienna’s Danube Island. The Austrians, seeded number 25, lost a hard-fought match once morest the English twins Javier and Joaquin Bello (24) 1:2 (-22,22,-12) on Friday in the intermediate round on the center court and were eliminated. From a red-white-red point of view, only Julian Hörl/Alexander Horst are represented at the home tournament.
The first set was balanced for a long time. Seidl and Pristauz fended off four set balls, but the Spaniards, who live in London, struck on the fifth attempt. In the second round, the ÖVV duo missed a 18:14 lead and three set balls before using the fourth to equalize the set. In the decision, the young Bello brothers had the better end for themselves.
“Losing at home is really bitter. We wanted to be in the top ten, we didn’t make it, so the disappointment prevails,” said Seidl in an ORF interview. In the end, 17th place went to the domestic pairing.
Hörl and Horst (8) qualified directly for the round of 16 on Thursday by winning the group, which will be played as the last game on the center court in the evening. Opponents are the Dutchmen Leon Luini/Yorick De Groot (10).
