Seibu’s Taira, who is in his second year as a starter, pitched for his first free batting of camp. With temporary coach Daisuke Matsuzaka (Sponichi newspaper critic) watching on as it was his last day of coaching, he threw 50 pitches to his new helpers Aguilar and Cordero, limiting them to just two hits.

He also tried the new gyro slider, which has a sharp vertical change, and said, “The quality of the ball is stable. The only thing left to see is how many whiffs I can get.” He has been aiming to scientifically evolve since last year, when he won double digits for the first time and led the team with 11 wins in his first year as a starter. During his practice, he wears a Garmin smartwatch on his left hand that can measure his physical activity. Calories consumed are calculated, and he explained, “If you don’t eat that much, you’ll lose weight, and on the other hand, you’ll gain weight, so it’s important.” He currently weighs 101 kg, 2 kg more than when he entered camp. He is searching for the best weight and has set his goal of becoming the strikeout champion, saying, “Moving heavier weight faster will increase the speed of the ball.”

It has also been decided that he will play for Samurai Japan in the European national team match on March 6th and 7th (Kyocera Dome). He was eager to play on the Hinomaru stage for the first time since the Tokyo Olympics, saying, “I want to try out the new ball.” (Ryota Fukui)
