Seibu Announces Acquisition of Zhang Yi from Orix

Seibu strengthens the relief team, which has become weak due to Taira’s conversion to the starting lineup

Seibu announced on the 15th that it will acquire pitcher Zhang Yi as compensation for Yuya Mori, who exercised his domestic free agent (FA) rights and transferred to Orix.

Born in Taiwan, 28-year-old Zhang Yi joined the team as an outfielder in 1st place in the 2016 Development Player Draft. He was registered as a pitcher in 2019, and in the same year he was registered under control and won his first professional victory. He had a 2.38 ERA in 15 games this season.

Seibu pitcher Kaiba Taira, who has pitched in 64 games this season and has 34 holds, has decided to turn to the starting pitcher next season, and it has taken the form of strengthening the relief team, which is lacking.

Zhang Yi’s comments released by ORIX are as follows.

“To be honest, I was just surprised when I heard regarding this news. In the six years since I joined ORIX, I have been indebted to many people, including players, staff, and fans. I have nothing but gratitude to all of you.The warm support of the fans really gave me strength, so I would be happy if you might support me in my new world.I will repay the favor by playing an active part in the Lions that chose me. I think it will be, so I will continue to do my best with all my might.”
