Sehwag is one of the best batsmen Indian cricket has ever seen. A lower order batsman in his early days, he later became an opener which changed his career. Sehwag’s style was to attack and play in any format.

Recently, Sehwag made a shocking revelation regarding the former coach of India, New Zealander John Wright. Sehwag opened up regarding a bad experience he had to face from Wright’s side. In 2000, BCCI appointed Wright, who is also a former New Zealand player, as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Wright was the coach of the team until 2005. Sehwag revealed that he had a bad experience from Wright during the ODI series once morest England in 2004. Sehwag said this openly at the launch of the book ‘Pitchside: My Life in Indian Cricket’ written by Amit Mathur, former general manager of BCCI. He also stated that he had immediately complained to the BCCI officials regarding the incident that day.

“After I came back to the dressing room for a small score, John Wright grabbed me, pushed me and grabbed me by the collar. I was very angry. Rajeev, who was the then team manager, immediately complained regarding this incident to Shukla. How can a white man hit me? That made me angry. Later, Amrit Mathur and Rajeev Shukla called me and Wright together and settled the issues,’ said Sehwag.

This was when Indian cricket was in a big crisis due to the match-fixing controversy. Wright was also able to play a crucial role in bringing back Indian cricket to its former glory. In the 2003 ICC ODI World Cup under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, the Indian team reached the final under Wright’s tutelage. India lost to Australia led by Ricky Ponting in the final match.

During that time, Wright has been able to nurture and give opportunities to many young players in the Indian team.
