SeeYouSpaceCowboy were never at a loss for creative ideas, be it in lyrics, sound or visuals. For their latest caper, however, the US quintet came up with a complex concept, based on an original visual vision that mixes pointed theatricality with the familiar demolition of post-hardcore and screamo, and also sprinkles in some cabaret and burlesque. „Coup de Grace“ deals with a burning city and the self-indulgence of the tragic figures who reside there.
The jazzy, wicked opening is deceptive: “Allow Us To Set The Scene” with one of several contributions from iRis.EXE leads seductively and balladically onto the stage before the action changes out of nowhere and is dismantled by sharp screams. Immediately followingwards, “Subtle Whispers To Take Your Breath Away” brings together pretty much everything that SeeYouSpaceCowboy is regarding in one track. Memories of At The Drive-In are brought back as well as Panic! At The Disco, whose clever conceptual works were obviously the inspiration – at least until the next screamo attack, which is of course destructive.
Nothing, nowhere appears in the crazy, danceable math demolition “Rhythm And Rapture”. and grounds the strange, hypnotizing track in an exciting way. The dance floor performance is surprisingly reminiscent of Bloc Party, everything around is loud and chaotic. “To The Dance Floor For Shelter” seems to be the motto, although the song in question with Courtney Laplante has become another bulky and at the same time anthemic steam hammer, shedding its skin several times and being incredibly likeable. In comparison, “Curtain Call” seems straight-forward and anthemic, even if the freak out is not missing here. And yet the melodic parts come damn well, as in the no less gripping “And The Two Slipped Into The Shadows”, which – in its usual manner – stands in its own way with growing enthusiasm.
Not 08/15 and certainly not 08/16, SeeYouSpaceCowboy continues to stay true to this motto with growing enthusiasm. “Coup De Grâce” deviates somewhat from Connie Sgarbossa’s deeply personal lyrics, but skilfully embeds them in an exciting conceptual work that pairs sensory overload with fierce frontal attacks and perhaps the most beautiful moments of the US band’s musical work to date . The quintet’s third studio album is more melodic and uncompromising than ever, and at the same time promises great things. These wild, detached, endlessly creative SeeYouSpaceCowboy are a lot of fun.
