Mumbai: The Bombay Parsi Panchayat (BPP) has announced that it is seeking complete exemption from the Single Civil Code. On Friday, the trustees informed the community members through a message that they were trying to make such a move. It is a trust that raises its voice and fights for the rights of the Parsi community who have migrated to the country.

The BPP has also started such a move following the Central Government assured to exempt the tribal groups and Christians of the North-Eastern States from the Uniform Civil Code.

A member of the trust told the Free Press Journal that an advisory committee comprising priests, scholars, senior lawyers and retired judges has been formed. Trustee member Xerxes Dastur said that following several days of deliberations, the BPP Trust has also prepared a draft code of conduct to opt out of the Single Civil Code.

The Government will be asked to exempt the Bombay Parsi Panchayat from the Uniform Civil Code, considering the characteristics of the community organisation. We migrated to India to preserve the community’s unique identity, customs and worship practices. The message received by the trustee members also says that this is the main requirement of the trust.

All trustee members have signed the public message to community members. Chairperson Armity Tirandas and co-trustees Anahita Desai, Maharukh Noble, Adil Mallia, Viraf Mehta, Xerxes Dastur and Hoshang Jal have signed. The message also said that a formal reply will be given to the government before the deadline.

But following this message became news in the media, she informed the media of a different position. The BPP Trust Core Committee has assessed the implications of a single civil code for the community and the trust aims to preserve the customs, rituals, culture and unique heritage of a small community that migrated to India from Persia 1300 years ago.

The members said that the final decisions on the Civil Code will be taken soon and the Law Commission will be informed within the stipulated time. The BPP office bearers stated that they respect the sovereignty of the Government of India and accept the social, cultural and economic features.
