On Wednesday, September 13, Emma Modesta Coronel Aispuro walked out of the American prison gate. This after having served a prison sentence of 3 years. Coronel was arrested at the airport in Washington in 2021 and pleaded guilty to money laundering and drug smuggling. She is also said to have helped her husband Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, one of the world’s most notorious drug lords and former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, when he escaped from a Mexican prison in 2015.
But while ‘El Chapo’ is once again in prison – this time he is serving a life sentence in the US – his much younger sweetheart is walking around free again. And she is not bored, as recent images from Milan prove. The former model was suddenly spotted on the catwalk during Milan Fashion Week. There she showed a wedding dress by the famous designer April Black Diamond.

The maker of the dress not only wanted to show dresses, but also convey a message. It had to be about the stories behind the clothes. And Emma Coronel, according to her, is an example of ‘strength, courage and hope’. A controversial person who deserves a second chance and ‘breaks the chains of the past’, according to the fashion brand.
Opinions are probably divided as to whether that is really the case. Coronel announced some time ago that she fully supported her husband. She claims he is innocent. This while he was actually convicted as one of the leaders of a drug cartel that, according to justice, was involved in torture, murders and large-scale coke smuggling – some sources claim that the Mexican had a fortune of more than 1 billion dollars at his peak.
This is how ‘El Chapo’ met his wife
Emma was born in the hippie city of San Francisco in the late 1980s, the daughter of mother Blanca Estela Aispuro and father Inés Coronel Barreras. The family at one point moved to Mexico, where she competed in a beauty pageant as a teenager. Reportedly, ‘El Chapo’ came to watch the beauty pageant. That was love at first sight. According to the stories, the couple decided to tie the knot on that day. Emma was only 17 years old at the time, ‘El Chapo’ was almost 50.
The meeting between the two was not entirely coincidental. Emma’s father Inés Coronel Barreras is a convicted drug boss who worked for his son-in-law’s cartel. The criminal was reportedly fairly high in the pecking order within the organization and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Mexico in 2017 for drug smuggling and the illegal possession of firearms.
